Innovative Wallet Solution Addresses Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Fork
The developers of a new wallet claim to have devised a method to counter quantum computing threats by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in tandem with Bitcoin, eliminating the need for any modifications to the network itself. Postquant Labs recently unveiled the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which leverages the Arch Network to build smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach enables the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, providing an extra layer of security without relying on elliptic curve math that quantum computers could potentially compromise. By employing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without altering Bitcoin's core layer. The launch of Quip's wallet comes amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to address quantum risk, with some proposals, such as Jameson Lopp's BIP-361 and Paul Sztorc's eCash hard fork, facing resistance from the community. Quip's solution offers an alternative that requires no soft fork, consensus change, or community vote, providing immediate protection against quantum threats.
