Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities

Ondo Finance has taken a significant step towards bridging the gap between tokenized equities and their traditional counterparts by introducing a proxy voting feature. This innovation enables investors to engage in corporate governance, a crucial aspect of traditional investing, now made accessible through Ondo's platform. In partnership with Broadridge Financial Solutions, Ondo's users can review company filings and cast their votes via Broadridge's ProxyVote system, leveraging over 250 tokenized securities. The process is streamlined, allowing investors to log in using their crypto wallets and access tools typically found in brokerage accounts. This move is particularly noteworthy given the rapid growth of tokenized equities in the crypto space, with the sector now boasting over $1.1 billion in locked value, more than triple its size from the previous year, according to RWA.xyz. As the largest issuer in this sector, with over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform for non-U.S. investors, Ondo is at the forefront of this development. The introduction of proxy voting addresses a significant gap in tokenized equities, which often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens are distinct from the underlying shares and do not confer direct shareholder rights, this new system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. "This development aligns with Ondo's mission to increase accessibility to traditional financial assets," stated Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, in an interview with CoinDesk. "By being on-chain, investors benefit from the free transferability and compatibility with DeFi, while also gaining the governance benefits associated with the underlying assets." Broadridge, known for processing large volumes of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its capabilities to blockchain systems. The goal is to support both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows, thereby enhancing the scalability and trustworthiness of the tokenized world for end investors. "Providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance will significantly contribute to making the tokenized world more scalable and trustworthy," noted Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge.
