Senator Warren Raises Concerns Over Tether's Alleged Loan to Commerce Secretary Lutnick's Family
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. finances, is facing questions from Senate Democrats regarding reports that a trust connected to his children received a loan from Tether. The loan allegedly helped finance Lutnick's transfer of his company stake to his children as part of his compliance with government ethics requirements after taking office. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino, seeking clarification on the matter. The lawmakers expressed concerns that if the reports are accurate, it could raise serious questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and the potential influence of Tether on his policy decisions. The issue has come to light after Congress passed a new law governing stablecoin issuers, including Tether, with the support of the Trump administration. Lutnick and Tether CEO Ardoino were both present at the White House signing of the law. The senators have urged Lutnick to make decisions that prioritize the public interest over his family's financial interests or those of Tether. Representatives for the Department of Commerce and Tether have not responded to requests for comment on the matter. Tether has been expanding its U.S. presence, including the launch of its USAT stablecoin, and has ties to a political action committee that has donated to Republican candidates.
