Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities

In a significant move to bridge the gap between traditional and tokenized equities, Ondo Finance has launched a proxy voting feature. This innovation allows holders of over 250 tokenized securities on the Ondo platform to engage with company filings and cast their votes through Broadridge Financial Solutions' ProxyVote system. By integrating crypto wallets, investors can access documents and governance tools typically available only through traditional brokerage accounts. This development underscores the rapid growth of tokenized equities in the crypto sector, which now boasts over $1.1 billion in value, having tripled in the past year. As the largest issuer in this space with over $700 million in tokenized stocks and ETFs on its Global Markets platform, Ondo is catering to non-U.S. investors. The introduction of proxy voting is crucial as it addresses a significant gap in governance rights for tokenized equity offerings. Although Ondo's tokens are separate from the underlying shares and do not confer direct shareholder rights, this new system enables investors to express their voting preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. According to Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, "This move aligns with Ondo's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible. By being on-chain, these assets become freely transferable and compatible with DeFi, while also offering the governance benefits associated with the underlying assets." Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support blockchain systems. The goal is to create a seamless workflow that accommodates both digital and conventional assets, providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance. As noted by Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, this development will enhance the scalability and trustworthiness of the tokenized world for end investors.
