KuCoin EU Bolsters Anti-Money Laundering Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address regulatory concerns, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has expanded its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the exchange was instructed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff dedicated to AML and compliance. KuCoin EU, which is licensed under the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its new Anti-Money Laundering Officer, while also broadening its AML function. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as deputy anti-money laundering officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized the exchange's commitment to strengthening its compliance team, which has led to multiple appointments and a significant expansion of the team. KuCoin has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the U.S. following a Commodity Futures Trading Commission order and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without a proper license. However, Liu could not provide a specific timeline for when the FMA would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, stating that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.
