Bitcoin Surges Past $78,000, Igniting Momentum Among Traders
The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has broken through the $78,000 barrier, lifting the entire cryptocurrency market. This upward movement was triggered by improved risk sentiment following the extension of the ceasefire with Iran by U.S. President Donald Trump, which also led to gains in stock index futures. After weeks of fluctuating between $65,000 and $75,000, Bitcoin's ascent has provided momentum traders with the long-awaited signal to enter the market. Momentum traders typically buy when they observe evidence of an upward trend, and Bitcoin's recent breakout serves as a clear indication of this trend. As a result, more buyers are likely to join the market, further amplifying the momentum. Analysts at Marex note that the market's prolonged period of being capped between $65 and $75 has come to an end, which is a significant development as it alters investor behavior. Sellers who previously felt comfortable selling during rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy, while momentum buyers have finally received the confirmation they were waiting for. On-chain indicators also suggest a similar trend. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges has dropped to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This indicates continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Furthermore, the reduction in Bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale and more being transferred to long-term holders, is resulting in increased scarcity and potential volatility. However, QCP Capital is advising caution due to the persistent relative richness of Bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used as a hedge against potential price drops. The firm also notes that crypto trends currently seem to be influenced by the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing back from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, security risks in DeFi continue to be a concern as hacks become more frequent. The Sui-based Volo protocol was recently drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO event caused damage across the sector. The chart of Bitcoin's daily price movements shows that the price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is a pivotal development. This is because the 100-day average previously capped the bounce in January, leading to a deeper crash to nearly $60,000. Now that the price has pierced through this average, it typically signals a strengthening of bullish momentum, with the focus shifting to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
