Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments
The emergence of AI agents is transforming the online payment landscape, with crypto infrastructure playing a pivotal role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In an interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was previously unimaginable has become a reality due to the rapid advancements in autonomous AI systems. As AI agents continue to evolve, the need for seamless transactions has become increasingly evident. This has led to a surge of interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously make payments for services such as data access, computing power, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed in collaboration with companies like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a crucial component of this shift. The x402 protocol enables on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, AI agents can make a single API call or smart contract call, facilitating global, instant, and virtually free transactions. According to Pollak, the x402 protocol has already processed approximately $48 million in payment volume, with around 95% of these transactions occurring on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that can be accessed directly by AI agents. Pollak's long-term vision is to create an open marketplace where AI agents can access services programmatically, without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. He described a system where software can discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time, seamlessly. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes that the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting themselves with AI. He noted that top performers are now utilizing AI agents to enhance their performance, describing workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto industry, the primary challenge remains adoption. Pollak argues that the solution lies not in better marketing, but in making crypto payments invisible and seamless.
