Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency

In a landmark decision, Israel's financial regulator has given the green light to a stablecoin pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a thorough two-year evaluation and pilot phase, the Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with the Big Four consulting firm EY overseeing the auditing process. The stablecoin market, which involves crypto tokens tied to the value of traditional assets like fiat currencies, has experienced significant growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion. This expansion is largely attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital autonomy if on-chain payments default to dollars as their standard unit of account. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has emerged as a strong performer among developed market currencies, buoyed by a robust technology sector and consistent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has gained over 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
