DeFi Leaders Unite to Launch $303 Million Rescue Plan for Aave Users After Devastating Crypto Hack

The world of decentralized finance has often been marked by division, but the recent crisis has brought about an unusual display of unity. Aave, a prominent lending protocol, has become the focal point of a broad recovery effort following significant losses resulting from the Kelp DAO exploit. This endeavor, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has secured approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with a substantial portion of the capital awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave, has prompted a highly coordinated industry response. Aave Labs has proposed allocating up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery plan, while other key players, including Consensys and its founder Joseph Lubin, have pledged significant financial support. The initiative has also drawn contributions from various entities, such as Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle, which have proposed allocating stETH, ETH, and credit facilities to support users and mitigate bad debt. Furthermore, several organizations, including Babylon Foundation, Renzo, and Circle Ventures, have made significant deposits into Aave or purchased AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with entities like Ethena, LayerZero, and Frax Finance also contributing to the effort. The diversity of contributions, ranging from grants to credit lines, highlights the different approaches being taken to balance support with risk management. Aave Labs has also proposed a plan to release immobilized ETH into the coordinated remediation effort, aiming to restore rsETH's backing and compensate affected holders. While much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, the breadth of participation underscores the far-reaching impact of the exploit across DeFi. As Joseph Lubin noted, 'The Ethereum ecosystem has always been at its best when it moves together,' and the DeFi United initiative embodies this spirit of collaboration and collective action.
