Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. This development marks a significant milestone in the growth of the stablecoin sector, which has expanded to over $300 billion in the past 18 months. The BILS stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network and leading crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by EY. The emergence of the Israeli shekel as a strong performer among developed market currencies, buoyed by a thriving tech sector and sound macroeconomic management, has prompted its introduction into the blockchain financial system. With the shekel gaining over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, it has become one of the best-performing currencies among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By bringing the shekel on-chain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
