New Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Fork
The developers of a new wallet claim to have devised a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in parallel with the Bitcoin network, eliminating the need for any alterations to the network itself. Postquant Labs introduced the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which operates on the Arch Network, a platform that enables developers to build smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach integrates a post-quantum signature scheme known as WOTS+ into Bitcoin's existing security framework, thereby enhancing its resilience against potential quantum attacks. By employing a 'Layer 2' solution, which processes transactions separately before settling them on the main chain, developers can introduce new features without modifying Bitcoin's core layer. The launch of this wallet comes amidst ongoing discussions within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum risk, with some proposals suggesting significant changes to the network and others advocating for more incremental solutions.
