Trump Administration Drops Investigation, Paving Way for Federal Reserve Nominee
A significant development has occurred in President Donald Trump's efforts to shape U.S. financial and economic policy, as the Department of Justice has dropped its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. This move may have opened up a clear path for Trump's nominee, Kevin Warsh, to be confirmed as Powell's replacement. Warsh, who has substantial personal wealth, including assets in the cryptocurrency sector, had been awaiting a final vote from the Senate following his confirmation hearing. Trump had chosen Warsh to take over from Powell, whom he has criticized for maintaining high interest rates. However, Republican Senator Thom Tillis had vowed to block Warsh's confirmation as long as the DOJ's investigation into Powell continued. The investigation, which was related to cost overruns in a Federal Reserve building project, was dropped on Friday, with the DOJ instead asking the Fed's inspector general to look into the matter and issue a report. This development has significantly improved Warsh's chances of being confirmed, with one prediction market showing his odds of being confirmed by May 15 increasing from around 30% to over 80%. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro stated that she expects a comprehensive report from the inspector general and is confident that the outcome will help resolve the issues that led to the investigation. Pirro also noted that she will not hesitate to restart the investigation if the facts warrant it. Having his own nominee at the helm of the Federal Reserve would give Trump greater influence over U.S. monetary policy and provide him with more allies on the Fed board, particularly when it comes to making decisions about the crypto industry and stablecoin issuers. The development may also allow the Republican-majority Senate to move more quickly towards confirming Warsh, who has insisted that he will act independently of White House direction. However, not everyone is convinced by the move, with Senator Elizabeth Warren dismissing it as an attempt to clear the path for Warsh's confirmation. Warren noted that the administration is still pursuing a court case against Fed Governor Lisa Cook and stated that the DOJ's announcement was simply a threat to restart the investigation into Powell at any time. Senator Tillis, on the other hand, has expressed his support for Warsh, calling him a 'great nominee' and stating that he will vote in favor of him once the DOJ drops its investigation into Powell.
