Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities

Ondo Finance has taken a significant step towards bridging the gap between tokenized equities and their traditional counterparts by introducing proxy voting for its token holders. This move enables investors to participate in corporate governance, a key aspect of traditional investing. The new feature, developed in collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, allows holders of over 250 tokenized securities on Ondo's platform to review company filings and cast their votes through Broadridge's ProxyVote system. By logging in with their crypto wallets, investors can access documents and governance tools typically reserved for brokerage accounts. The introduction of proxy voting is particularly significant, as tokenized equities have been growing rapidly, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, and Ondo is the largest issuer in this sector, with over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform. The addition of proxy voting addresses a long-standing issue with tokenized equities, which often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens do not grant direct shareholder rights, the new system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting the underlying shares. According to Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, this development aligns with Ondo's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible, offering the benefits of being on-chain, such as free transferability and compatibility with DeFi, while also providing governance rights. Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to blockchain systems through this partnership, with the goal of supporting both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows. As Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, noted, providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance will help make the tokenized world more scalable and trustworthy for end investors.
