New Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Fork

The developers of a newly launched wallet claim to have developed a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing for Bitcoin, utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network without altering it. The Postquant Labs' Quip Network wallet, announced on Tuesday, operates on the Arch Network, a platform that enables developers to create smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach allows for the implementation of a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, which enhances Bitcoin's security without relying on elliptic curve mathematics that could be compromised by a quantum computer. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without modifying Bitcoin's core protocol. According to Postquant Labs CEO Colton Dillion, 'The Bitcoin community has delayed addressing the quantum problem for years, despite it being discussed by Satoshi himself. While protocol upgrades may take 5 to 10 years, our approach provides similar protection immediately.' The launch of Quip's wallet comes amidst ongoing debates within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to address quantum risk. Prominent developer Jameson Lopp has proposed phasing out quantum-vulnerable addresses, while Paul Sztorc's eCash hard fork proposal aims to create a quantum-resistant sidechain. However, Quip's approach eliminates the need for a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote. The setup has its technical trade-offs, with Lopp arguing that Layer 2 protection is insufficient due to the potential for public key leakage. Nevertheless, Postquant Labs CTO Dr. Richard Carback claims that their approach reduces the window for a quantum attack to as little as two blocks, roughly 20 minutes. The wallet app is set to launch next week, and a third-party audit is currently underway. The success of Quip's approach will depend on the timing of the arrival of quantum computers and the Bitcoin community's willingness to adopt new solutions.
