Gemini Secures Derivatives License, Expands into Regulated Markets
Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has received approval from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for a derivatives clearinghouse license. This development enables the company to clear and settle trades internally, thereby gaining greater control over its prediction market products. As a result, Gemini's shares experienced a 7% increase following the announcement. The cryptocurrency exchange is now poised to compete with established players such as Kalshi and Polymarket in the prediction markets sector, which has witnessed a significant surge in trading volume, exceeding $63.5 billion in 2025. With the newly acquired licenses, Gemini aims to establish a comprehensive trading ecosystem, offering a wide range of products including sports, crypto, futures, options, and event-based contracts. The company also intends to expand its services to include crypto futures, options, and perpetuals for U.S. users, as part of its broader strategy to create a 'super app' for financial services.
