Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has surged past $78,000, bolstering the broader cryptocurrency market, as risk appetite improved following the extension of the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran by President Donald Trump. This upward momentum has ended weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, providing momentum traders with the catalyst they had been anticipating. Momentum traders typically enter the market when they identify an upward trend, and Bitcoin's recent breakout may attract more buyers, thereby intensifying the momentum. According to analysts at Marex, 'The market had been confined to a range between $65 and $75 for months. Breaking out of this range is significant because it alters market behavior. Sellers who were previously comfortable selling rallies above $74 must now reassess, while momentum buyers who were waiting for confirmation now have a basis to act upon.' On-chain indicators also suggest continued investor accumulation, with the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges dropping to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This could lead to a supply shock. However, QCP Capital advises caution due to the persistent relative richness of Bitcoin put options on Deribit, indicating that trends in the crypto market are currently tied to oil prices and interest-rate expectations. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist as hacks continue to occur, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million. The path forward for Bitcoin remains tied to oil and policy, with a potential move lower in crude or clearer Fed signaling supporting risk appetite.
