Senator Warren Investigates Commerce Secretary Lutnick's Ties to Tether Over Alleged Family Loan

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. finances, is facing scrutiny from Senate Democrats over reports that his family received a loan from Tether to facilitate his divestment of company shares to his children. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino seeking clarification on the matter. The lawmakers expressed concern that such a loan could raise questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and the potential influence on his policy decisions. The inquiry comes as Congress has recently introduced new regulations for stablecoin issuers, including Tether, with Lutnick and Ardoino having been involved in related discussions and events. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions in the best interest of the public, rather than his family or Tether. Representatives from the Department of Commerce and Tether have not yet commented on the letters. Meanwhile, Lutnick's company, Cantor Fitzgerald, is now led by his sons, and Tether is expanding its U.S. presence, including the launch of its USAT stablecoin.
