Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Fork
The developers of a newly introduced wallet claim to have devised a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in tandem with Bitcoin, eliminating the need for any alterations to the network itself. Postquant Labs recently unveiled the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which operates on the Arch Network, a system enabling developers to construct smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach allows for the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, to enhance Bitcoin's existing security without relying on elliptic curve mathematics that quantum computers could potentially breach. By employing a 'Layer 2' network, built on top of Bitcoin to process transactions and settle back to the main chain, developers can introduce new features without modifying Bitcoin's base layer. The launch of this wallet occurs amidst ongoing discussions within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to address quantum risk, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork, while the Quip approach offers an alternative solution that requires no consensus change or community vote.
