Unofficial Hong Kong Stablecoins Emerge Amid Regulatory Vacuum
Hong Kong's financial regulator has cautioned that fake stablecoins are taking advantage of the city's new regulatory framework before any officially licensed products have been launched. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority stated that certain tokens labeled 'HKDAP' and 'HSBC' are being traded, but they are not associated with any approved issuer. This comes after the HKMA recently awarded its first stablecoin licenses, selecting two applicants out of 36, in a move that mirrors the existing banking system where a limited number of banks are authorized to issue currency. The regulator warned the public to be cautious of scams and to only use official channels for transactions. Industry insiders anticipate the official launch of licensed stablecoins to coincide with Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
