DOJ Drops Investigation, Paving Way for Trump's Federal Reserve Nominee
The US Department of Justice, led by President Donald Trump, has stepped back from an investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, which could pave the way for Trump's nominee, Kevin Warsh, to take over as Fed chair. Warsh, who has significant personal wealth, including assets in the cryptocurrency space, has been awaiting a final Senate vote after a confirmation hearing. Trump has been critical of Powell's management of interest rates and chose Warsh as his replacement. However, Republican Senator Thom Tillis had threatened to block Warsh's confirmation as long as the DOJ investigation into Powell continued. The investigation, related to a Federal Reserve building project, was dropped, and the matter has been referred to the Fed's inspector general. Following the news, the likelihood of Warsh's confirmation before May 15 increased significantly. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that she expects a comprehensive report from the inspector general and is confident it will resolve the questions surrounding the investigation. Trump's ability to appoint his own people to the Federal Reserve would give him greater influence over US monetary policy and provide him with more allies on the Fed board, which makes decisions on financial policy, including regulations for the crypto industry. Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the move, calling it an attempt to clear the path for Warsh's confirmation. Senator Tillis, on the other hand, expressed his support for Warsh, stating he would vote in favor of the nominee now that the DOJ has dropped its investigation into Powell.
