Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a thorough two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been granted permission to issue the token. BILS, the newly approved stablecoin, is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, reaching a valuation of over $300 billion, driven largely by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets, including the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty, should on-chain payments default to the dollar as their standard unit of account. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable resilience, supported by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management, making it one of the top-performing fiat currencies among developed economies. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the dollar, outperforming other major currencies and solidifying its position as a leading currency in the global economy. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being integrated into blockchain-based financial systems, thereby promoting greater diversity and autonomy in the digital asset landscape.
