Counterfeit Hong Kong Stablecoins Emerge Amid Regulatory Vacuum

The central banking authority of Hong Kong has issued a warning regarding the presence of fake stablecoins, which are taking advantage of the city's new stablecoin framework before any officially licensed products have been launched. According to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, certain tokens labeled as 'HKDAP' and 'HSBC' are being traded, but they are not associated with any authorized issuers. This development comes after the HKMA recently granted its first stablecoin licenses, selecting two applicants out of 36, in a move that mirrors the existing monetary system where a limited number of banks are permitted to issue banknotes. The HKMA has advised the public to exercise caution and only rely on official communications from licensed entities, while also urging users to conduct transactions through regulated platforms. Industry insiders anticipate the official launch of licensed stablecoins to coincide with Hong Kong's fintech week in November.
