This donation was made prior to Farage's announcement to run for the Clacton seat in the 2024 election. The Conservative and Labour parties have raised concerns that this gift was not properly declared, potentially violating House of Commons rules. In response, a Reform UK spokesperson characterized the payment as a 'personal unconditional gift' that was made before Farage's election and emphasized that his decision to stand as an MP was unrelated to the donation. The spokesperson also expressed confidence that all necessary declarations had been made in accordance with the rules. The Commons code of conduct requires new MPs to register any benefits received in the 12 months preceding their election, and specifies that any benefit should be registered if there is doubt about its nature.
