The future of blockchain is private, with institutions demanding greater confidentiality in their transactions. This month, Tempo, a Stripe-backed payment blockchain, unveiled a proposal for private enterprise stablecoin transactions, signaling a verdict on the need for privacy in institutional chains. The question now is what kind of privacy will be built. The problem with public chains is that everything is visible, making it an existential problem for financial markets. Institutions are ready to deploy resources on-chain, but the lack of privacy is holding them back. Tempo's solution, Zones, offers private parallel blockchains connected to the main network, but its privacy model is operator-visible, requiring trust in an intermediary. Zero-knowledge cryptography offers a different path, allowing parties to prove transaction validity without revealing underlying data. This approach builds privacy-preserving functionality into the execution layer, eliminating the need for trusted intermediaries. The industry must now choose between privacy through trusted operators or cryptographic guarantees that require no trust at all. Both are legitimate answers, but they are not equivalent, and the chosen privacy model will determine the risk surface, compliance posture, and exposure to failure modes of intermediaries.
