Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel

In a significant move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the new token, known as BILS. This development marks a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the esteemed consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has witnessed exponential growth over the past 18 months, surpassing $300 billion in value, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets like the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential losses in financial and digital sovereignty, should on-chain payments default to the dollar as their standard unit of account. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable resilience, bolstered by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management, making it one of the top-performing fiat currencies among developed nations. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by more than 20% against the US dollar, as reported by Visual Capitalist, earning it the distinction of being the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
