Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty for Achieving Largest Quantum Attack on Underlying Technology

The perceived threat of quantum attacks on bitcoin has become more tangible, as an independent researcher has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement, recognized with a 1 bitcoin bounty, demonstrates a significant leap forward in the capability to compromise the underlying technology. The breakthrough, made by Giancarlo Lelli, is 512 times larger than the previous public demonstration in September 2025. Although this does not pose an immediate threat to bitcoin, as it uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, the achievement highlights the rapidly advancing field of quantum computing and its potential implications for cryptocurrency security.
