Bitcoin's Quantum Conundrum: A Threat to 6.9 Million Coins

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computers, the ownership of coins is at risk due to the type of math used to protect wallets. A quantum algorithm known as Shor's can potentially collapse the security gap, allowing attackers to access coins. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, including those held by Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed due to their public keys being visible on the blockchain. The 2021 Taproot upgrade has expanded the problem, and while there are proposals to address the issue, such as BIP-360 and a detection system, none have gained broad support from core developers. The lack of a formal governance process and funding for engineering work makes it challenging for bitcoin to coordinate an effective response, unlike Ethereum, which has a formal quantum-resistant program in place. The clock is ticking for bitcoin to prevent a potential quantum threat, and the question remains whether the network can coordinate a significant security upgrade before it's too late.
