Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: the Shekel Stablecoin
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with Big Four consultancy firm EY providing auditing oversight. This development comes as the stablecoin sector continues to experience rapid growth, surpassing $300 billion in value over the past 18 months. The dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial sovereignty in non-US markets. However, the introduction of the shekel stablecoin is poised to position Israel's currency alongside other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems. Notably, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated significant strength, gaining over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion.
