According to a report by The Guardian, Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, received a substantial gift of approximately £5 million, equivalent to $6.7 million, from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire with significant ties to the cryptocurrency company Tether. This donation was made prior to Farage's announcement to run for the Clacton seat in the 2024 election. The gift has sparked controversy, with both the Conservative and Labour parties arguing that Farage has breached House of Commons rules by not disclosing the donation. In response, a spokesperson for Reform UK has stated that the payment was a 'personal unconditional gift' made before Farage's election and that his decision to stand as a Member of Parliament was unrelated to the donation. The Commons code of conduct dictates that new MPs must register any benefits received in the 12 months preceding their election, and any doubt regarding a benefit's registration should be resolved by disclosing it. However, Reform UK claims that the gift falls under the exemption for purely personal gifts. The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner has been asked to investigate whether any of the donated funds were utilized to support political activities rather than enhancing security, as claimed by Farage. This development comes amidst a broader discussion on cryptocurrency donations in UK politics, with Harborne having made a record-breaking donation of £9 million to Reform UK and another significant donation from Ben Delo, co-founder of BitMEX.
