The threat of quantum attacks on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has become more tangible with the latest breakthrough by independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli. Lelli has been awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty, worth approximately $78,000, for successfully breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement represents a 512-fold increase over the previous public demonstration in September 2025. The implications of this breakthrough are significant, as it brings attention to the potential vulnerabilities of cryptographic systems used in cryptocurrencies. Elliptic curve cryptography is a crucial component of these systems, enabling crypto wallets to prove control over funds without revealing private keys.
