Bitcoin Faces Quantum Computing Threat: Can It Act in Time to Protect 6.9 Million Coins?

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computer attacks, the ownership of coins is at risk due to the type of mathematics used to secure wallets. A quantum algorithm known as Shor's can potentially break this security. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, including those held by the cryptocurrency's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed and could be stolen if a quantum computer is used to attack the network. The 2021 Taproot upgrade inadvertently increased the problem by making more keys visible. Ethereum, another major cryptocurrency, has been working on a quantum-resistant program since 2018 and has made significant progress. In contrast, bitcoin's development community has been slow to respond, with no concrete strategy emerging yet. Proposals have been made, including the introduction of new quantum-safe address types and a detection system to trigger defensive action in case of a quantum attack. However, these proposals lack broad support and solve different parts of the problem. The lack of a central authority and a governance process makes it challenging for bitcoin to coordinate a response to the quantum threat. The network's culture of resisting change and avoiding central authority may hinder its ability to migrate to quantum-resistant cryptography. With the timeline for quantum computing advancements uncertain, it remains to be seen whether bitcoin can overcome its challenges and protect its users' coins.
