Hundreds of Millions Pledged in Rescue Effort for Aave Users Following Massive Crypto Hack
The world of decentralized finance has often been marked by divisions, but in the face of crisis, an unusual level of coordination is emerging. Aave, a leading DeFi lending protocol, is at the forefront of a broad recovery effort after suffering significant losses due to the Kelp DAO exploit. This effort, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has garnered approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave, has prompted a highly coordinated industry response. Aave Labs, alongside other key players, is working to restore normal market conditions and support affected users. A governance proposal outlines a plan for the DAO to allocate up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery, with founder Stani Kulechov pledging to donate 5,000 ETH personally. Other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, BGD Labs, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, are also committing significant resources. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder Joseph Lubin committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink has played a strategic advisory role in these discussions. Smaller contributions are also being made by the community, including proposals from Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle, as well as deposits into Aave itself from entities like Babylon Foundation, Renzo, and Circle Ventures. The list of participants continues to grow, with entities such as Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation also involved. The breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi. Aave Labs has put forward a proposal to release roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by Arbitrum's Security Council into the coordinated remediation effort, aiming to 'make affected rsETH holders whole' and restore rsETH's backing. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the scale of the response underscores the determination to protect users and strengthen DeFi infrastructure.
