US Senators Prohibit Themselves from Participating in Prediction Markets

In a swift move, the US Senate has introduced a ban on its members participating in prediction markets, a decision that was unanimously agreed upon. This change comes after a resolution was proposed by Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, which aimed to restrict senators from using these platforms. Senator Moreno emphasized that lawmakers should not be involved in speculative activities like prediction markets while being paid by taxpayers, stating that their focus should be on serving the American people. The revised Senate rules, effective immediately, prohibit senators from entering into agreements that depend on the occurrence of specific events. This development follows a surge in popularity of political betting, with some candidates already facing penalties for wagering on their own elections. A leading platform, Polymarket, has expressed support for the Senate's decision, noting that its user rules already prohibit such conduct. Currently, betting odds on Polymarket indicate that Democrats have even chances of regaining the Senate majority in the upcoming November elections, with Democrats generally being more critical of the industry.
