Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Prize for Successful Quantum Attack on Cryptographic Technology

The threat of quantum attacks on bitcoin has become more tangible after a researcher successfully broke a 15-bit elliptic curve key, a crucial component of the cryptocurrency's underlying technology. This achievement, made possible by independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli, has earned him a 1 bitcoin prize, valued at approximately $76,300.81, from quantum security startup Project Eleven. The demonstration, which is the largest of its kind to date, has significant implications for the security of bitcoin and other major blockchains. Elliptic curve cryptography, the math behind crypto wallets, relies on the principle that deriving a private key from its public counterpart is virtually impossible. However, quantum computers, utilizing Shor's algorithm, pose a challenge to this assumption. Although Lelli's breakthrough does not immediately compromise bitcoin's security, which relies on 256-bit elliptic curve security, it underscores the rapidly advancing threat of quantum attacks. The previous public demonstration, a 6-bit break by Steve Tippeconnic in September 2025, has been surpassed by a factor of 512 in just seven months. This rapid progress has sparked concerns, with theoretical resource estimates indicating that the cost of a full 256-bit attack could be lower than initially thought. Project Eleven CEO Alex Pruden notes that the barrier to running such attacks is decreasing, with the winning submission coming from an independent researcher using cloud-accessible hardware. The concern is particularly acute for wallets with publicly visible keys, with approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, or one-third of the total supply, potentially vulnerable to quantum attacks. In response, bitcoin developers have proposed migration paths, including the introduction of quantum-safe address types, while other cryptocurrencies, such as Ethereum and Ripple, have also published post-quantum transition plans.
