Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: A Stablecoin Pegged to the Shekel
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. Dubbed BILS, the stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by Big Four consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market, which has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months to surpass $300 billion, is dominated by U.S. dollar-pegged tokens. However, the rise of non-U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoins is gaining momentum, driven by concerns over financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel, which has demonstrated remarkable resilience and strength, has gained over 20% against the dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
