Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty

The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, with a recent breakthrough demonstrating the feasibility of such attacks on a larger scale. Quantum security startup Project Eleven awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty, valued at approximately $78,000, to Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement represents the largest public demonstration of its kind and has significant implications for the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underpins the security of crypto wallets, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, quantum computers utilizing Shor's algorithm can potentially compromise this security. While Lelli's achievement does not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it highlights the rapid progress being made in quantum computing and the need for the cryptographic community to develop and implement quantum-resistant solutions. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly, with some predictions putting the cost below 500,000 physical qubits. As a result, there is growing concern about the vulnerability of wallets with publicly visible keys, with approximately 6.9 million bitcoin at risk. In response, developers are exploring migration paths, including the introduction of quantum-safe address types, to mitigate the potential impact of quantum attacks on the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
