Time is Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter Quantum Threat, Putting 6.9 Million BTC at Risk
Not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computers. The blockchain's ledger and the rule that new bitcoins can only be created through mining are secure from quantum threats. However, the ownership of bitcoins is at risk. Bitcoin wallets rely on a specific type of mathematics that converts a private key into a public address. This math is easy to perform in one direction but virtually impossible in the other, which is what prevents unauthorized access to coins. A quantum algorithm known as Shor's algorithm can bypass this security measure. Google recently published a paper demonstrating that this attack can be carried out with fewer resources than previously thought, and it can be executed within a timeframe that competes with bitcoin's block times. This article explores the potential risks, the current state of bitcoin's defense, and whether the network can coordinate a significant security upgrade before quantum computers become a threat. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, roughly one-third of all mined coins, are stored in wallets with publicly visible keys, making them vulnerable to quantum attacks. This includes early bitcoins and any wallet that has been used for transactions, as spending reveals the public key. The 2021 Taproot upgrade inadvertently increased the problem by publishing the key protecting any remaining balance at an address after a transaction. While there are ongoing debates and proposals, such as BIP-360 and a detection system from BitMEX Research, none have gained broad support from bitcoin's core developers. Ethereum, on the other hand, has a formal quantum-resistant program in place since 2018, with a dedicated plan and resources allocated for the migration. The main challenge for bitcoin is its lack of a central authority and governance process, which makes coordinating a response to the quantum threat difficult. The network must decide how to protect exposed coins, whether to allow migration to quantum-safe addresses, and what to do with coins whose owners cannot or will not migrate. Setting a migration deadline could force owners, including Satoshi Nakamoto, to either move their coins or risk losing them. The future of bitcoin's security depends on whether the network can overcome its governance hurdles and implement a post-quantum cryptography solution before it's too late.
