Israel Introduces First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. This milestone comes after a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, culminating in the authorization of Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the esteemed consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, reaching a staggering $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable resilience, with a 20% gain against the dollar over the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, that are gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
