Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Mitigate Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Forking
The developers of a novel wallet claim to have devised a method to counter the risks associated with quantum computing by employing a smart contract layer that functions in parallel with the Bitcoin network, without necessitating any alterations to the network itself. Postquant Labs unveiled its post-quantum bitcoin wallet, Quip Network, which operates on Arch Network, a platform enabling developers to construct smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach facilitates the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, to enhance Bitcoin's existing security. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without modifying Bitcoin's fundamental layer. The launch of Quip's wallet occurs amidst an ongoing debate regarding how Bitcoin should address the quantum risk, with some proposals, such as Jameson Lopp's BIP-361 and Paul Sztorc's eCash hard fork, having drawn criticism from the community. Quip's approach eliminates the need for a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote, providing an alternative solution to mitigate the quantum risk.
