US Army Green Beret Arrested for Allegedly Betting on Venezuela Raid

The US Department of Justice has taken a member of the US Army into custody, alleging that the individual engaged in unlawful activities by utilizing confidential government information for personal financial gain. Master Sergeant Gannon Ken Van Dyke, an active-duty soldier with the US Army Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets, has been charged with the unlawful use of confidential government information, theft of non-public government information, and fraud. The allegations stem from his involvement in a military operation aimed at detaining former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Van Dyke allegedly created an account on the betting platform Polymarket and placed multiple wagers totaling $33,000 on the outcome of the raid, ultimately winning approximately $400,000. US Attorney Jay Clayton stated that Van Dyke's actions constitute a clear case of insider trading and are illegal under federal law. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is also pursuing an insider trading complaint against Van Dyke. Following the raid, Van Dyke allegedly attempted to conceal his identity and transferred his winnings into a brokerage account. The incident has drawn attention to the use of confidential information for personal gain, with US President Donald Trump expressing his disapproval of the practice of using confidential information for betting purposes.
