Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty for Achieving Largest Quantum Attack on Cryptographic Technology
The potential quantum threat to Bitcoin's security has become more tangible. Quantum security startup Project Eleven awarded a 1 bitcoin prize, valued at approximately $78,000, to independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This feat, which is 512 times larger than the previous public demonstration, has significant implications for the security of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, the foundation of crypto wallet security, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, quantum computers using Shor's algorithm can potentially undermine this security. Although Lelli's achievement does not pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it highlights the rapidly advancing capabilities of quantum attacks. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's result marks a substantial increase in just seven months. As the resource requirements for such attacks continue to decrease, the need for quantum-safe address types and post-quantum transition plans becomes increasingly pressing. Several cryptocurrency platforms, including Ethereum and Ripple, have already proposed migration paths to mitigate the potential risks.
