Bitcoin Faces Imminent Quantum Threat, Putting 6.9 Million Coins at Risk

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum attacks, ownership is at significant risk. The current cryptographic protection used in bitcoin wallets can be broken by quantum computers, potentially allowing hackers to steal coins. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, including those owned by the network's creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are at risk due to exposed public keys. A quantum algorithm known as Shor's can significantly reduce the time it takes to break the encryption, and recent research suggests this could be achieved with fewer resources than previously thought. The bitcoin network must now consider how to respond to this threat, with proposals including the introduction of quantum-safe address types and detection systems. However, the lack of a central governing body and formal decision-making process may hinder the network's ability to coordinate an effective response. In contrast, Ethereum has had a formal quantum-resistant program in place since 2018 and is actively working on migrating to quantum-safe cryptography. The clock is ticking for bitcoin to address this vulnerability before it's too late.
