Bitcoin Community Outraged Over Proposed eCash Hard Fork and Reassignment of Satoshi Coins
Veteran Bitcoin developer Paul Sztorc has unveiled a proposal for a significant overhaul of the Bitcoin network, dubbed the eCash hard fork, slated for August 2026. This move would create a separate version of the blockchain, providing existing bitcoin holders with equivalent tokens on the new network. However, the community is up in arms over the plan to reassign coins associated with Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin's elusive founder, to attract investors prior to the fork. The concept of a hard fork is likened to a railway line splitting into two, allowing for distinct destinations. Sztorc's eCash hard fork aims to introduce a new chain, complete with its native eCash tokens and a scaling architecture known as Drivechains. This architecture facilitates the seamless transfer of BTC between the main chain and sidechains, enabling developers to build new features without altering the base layer. The proposed fork has sparked intense debate, with some critics labeling the reassignment of Satoshi coins as 'theft' and expressing concerns over the precedent it may set for the future of the Bitcoin network.
