Canadian Lawmakers Advance Proposal to Ban Crypto Donations in Politics

The Canadian government's plan to outlaw crypto donations has taken a significant step forward, gaining cross-party support and passing a crucial vote in Parliament with minimal opposition. The proposed legislation, known as Bill C-25, aims to prevent the use of cryptocurrencies, money orders, and prepaid payment products for political contributions, citing concerns over their potential to facilitate untraceable funding. The ban would apply to all federal political entities, including parties, candidates, and election advertisers. Recipients of illegal crypto donations would be required to return or remit them within 30 days. Despite initial concerns from some Conservative lawmakers, the issue of crypto donations did not become a major point of contention, largely due to the limited use of cryptocurrencies in Canadian politics. The bill will now proceed to a committee for further review and possible amendments, bringing Canada closer to joining the UK in banning crypto donations, while the US continues to permit them.
