Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The price of bitcoin, currently at $76,279.78, has surpassed $78,000, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market. This upward movement was fueled by improved risk sentiment following U.S. President Donald Trump's extension of the ceasefire with Iran, as well as gains in stock index futures. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, bitcoin's ascent has given momentum traders the catalyst they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically purchase when they observe evidence of an upward trend. Bitcoin's recent surge is a clear indication of this, and it may attract more buyers, thereby amplifying the momentum. As Newton's first law of motion states, an object in motion remains in motion unless an external force intervenes, a principle that can also be applied to financial markets. Analysts at Marex noted that the market had been confined to the $65 to $75 range for months, and breaking out of this range is significant because it alters investor behavior. Sellers who previously felt comfortable selling during rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy. Meanwhile, momentum buyers who were waiting for confirmation now have a solid foundation to build upon. On-chain indicators also suggest the same trend. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges has dropped to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This indicates continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange stated that the shrinking bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale, more BTC being transferred to long-term holders, and decreasing liquidity, is making bitcoin increasingly scarce. However, QCP Capital is advising caution due to the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit. The firm noted that crypto trends currently seem tied to oil prices and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. The broader market is still grappling with DeFi security risks, as hacks continue to occur. The Sui-based Volo protocol was recently drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO incident, which caused collateral damage across the sector.
