Jane Street Seeks Dismissal of Terraform Lawsuit Linked to UST-LUNA Collapse

Jane Street has filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by the bankruptcy estate of Terraform Labs, arguing that the claims against the trading firm are an attempt to deflect responsibility for the 2022 collapse of the TerraUSD (UST) stablecoin and its sister token Luna. In its filing to the Southern District of New York, Jane Street contends that the lawsuit rehashes events that have already been resolved in court and seeks to hold the company liable for losses caused by Terraform's own misconduct. The firm is urging the court to dismiss the complaint with prejudice, which would prevent Terraform from pursuing the same claims in the future. Jane Street argues that the core issues surrounding Terra's collapse have already been addressed in court, citing criminal and civil cases against Terraform founder Do Kwon, who has been found guilty of conspiracy and wire fraud and is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence. The company maintains that it had no involvement in Terraform's fraud scheme and that the lawsuit is an attempt to extract cash from Jane Street to compensate for Terraform's own wrongdoing. Terraform's lawsuit, filed in January, alleges that Jane Street engaged in insider trading that contributed to the collapse of the Terra ecosystem, but Jane Street disputes this narrative and denies any role in the collapse. The court's decision on Jane Street's motion could have significant implications for the assignment of responsibility for the collapse of the Terra ecosystem, which had a ripple effect across the crypto sector and contributed to the failures of several firms exposed to the project.
