Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for Tokenized Equity Holders

Ondo Finance has taken a significant step towards bridging the gap between tokenized equities and traditional ones by introducing proxy voting for holders of its extensive range of tokenized securities. This move allows investors to engage in corporate governance, a privilege typically reserved for those holding traditional assets in brokerage accounts. The feature, developed in collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, enables holders of over 250 tokenized securities to review company documents and cast their votes through Broadridge's ProxyVote system. By logging in with their crypto wallets, investors can access tools and documents usually available only through brokerage accounts. This development is particularly noteworthy given the rapid growth of tokenized equities in the crypto sector, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, more than tripling in size over the past year. As the largest issuer in this sector, with over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform, Ondo's introduction of proxy voting addresses a significant gap in governance rights for these assets. While the tokens do not grant direct shareholder rights, this system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the underlying shares. According to Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, this move aligns with Ondo's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible, combining the benefits of on-chain assets with the governance of underlying assets. Broadridge, a major processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows, aiming to provide the same level of transparency, auditability, and compliance. As noted by Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, this development will significantly enhance the scalability and trustworthiness of the tokenized world for end investors.
