Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has granted approval for the launch of a stablecoin pegged to the shekel, marking the first time a digital currency has been officially sanctioned in the country. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. This innovative digital currency was developed in collaboration with the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the esteemed Big Four consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced remarkable growth over the past 18 months, expanding to over $300 billion, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of U.S. dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-U.S. markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength, with a 20% gain against the dollar over the past year, according to Visual Capitalist, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other leading currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
