KuCoin EU Bolsters AML Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns
In an effort to address the concerns of its Austrian regulator, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has enhanced its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This move comes after the exchange was instructed to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in these areas. KuCoin EU, which is licensed by Austria's FMA under the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its anti-money laundering officer and expanded its AML function. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as deputy anti-money laundering officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized the exchange's commitment to transparency and dialogue with the regulator, stating that they have been supportive and honest throughout the process. Since February, KuCoin EU has been actively strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments to enhance its capabilities. The exchange has faced significant challenges recently, including being barred from the US market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and receiving regulatory action from Dubai's VARA for operating without a license. However, Liu was unable to provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, citing the need for ongoing discussions with the FMA.
