Bitcoin Faces Quantum Threat: Can It Upgrade Security Before It's Too Late?

The security of the bitcoin network is under threat from quantum computers, which could potentially drain 6.9 million BTC, including those owned by the network's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum attacks, the ownership of coins is at risk due to the type of math used to protect wallets. A quantum algorithm called Shor's can collapse the gap between the time it takes to turn a secret private key into a public address and the time it takes to reverse the process, which could allow attackers to access coins. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin are at risk, including those stored in wallets whose public keys are already visible on the blockchain. The 2021 Taproot upgrade expanded the problem by publishing the key protecting remaining bitcoin at an address after a transaction. While other blockchains, such as Ethereum, are preparing for the quantum threat, bitcoin has yet to develop a concrete strategy. Ethereum has a formal quantum-resistant program in place, with four teams working on the migration and a dedicated website to track progress. In contrast, bitcoin's development culture treats central authority as a failure mode, making it harder to implement effective solutions. A successful attack on bitcoin's math should not be seen as a wake-up call, but rather as a potential signal that post-quantum cryptography adoption has already failed. Developers must now decide whether to start the migration process now or wait until the threat becomes more visible.
